AI is developing at a rapid pace and is already embedded in our daily lives. It is transforming every walk of life and enabling people to rethink how we integrate information, analyse data, and use the resulting insights to improve decision-making. CLAIM:

“AI (short for “artificial intelligence”) is where computer systems try to copy or even surpass human intelligence.”

ASSESSMENT: TRUE

AI is the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines, especially computer systems. The goal of AI is to mimic human cognitive activity, including learning, reasoning, and perception. While AI is still in its early stages of development, it has already surpassed human intelligence in certain tasks such as playing chess and Go. However, AI is still considered narrow or weak AI, which means it can only perform specific tasks for which it is programmed.

CLAIMS:

“Narrow AI has become a big part of everyday life since the 1990s.”
“Narrow AI focuses on one narrow task - like online shopping, maps or dating.”
“[Narrow AI] carries risks like job loss, bias and fake news.”

ASSESSMENT: TRUE

Narrow AI, also known as weak AI, focuses on one narrow task and cannot perform beyond its limitations. It targets a single subset of cognitive abilities and advances in that spectrum. Narrow AI applications are becoming increasingly common in our day-to-day lives as machine learning and deep learning methods continue to develop. In the late 1990s and early 21st century, AI technology became widely used as elements of larger systems, but the field was rarely credited for these successes at the time. Narrow AI applications such as Apple Siri, IBM Watson, Google Translate, image recognition software, recommendation systems, spam filtering, and Google’s page-ranking algorithm are deeply embedded in the infrastructure of every industry. AI can lead to job losses in some industries due to AI-driven workplace automation. Algorithmic bias caused by bad data can lead to socioeconomic inequality. AI can also be used to create deepfake videos and online bots that manipulate public discourse by feigning consensus and spreading fake news.

Generative AI has been widely discussed in academic and industry circles for several years. However, the technology has gained more attention in the news since 2022, due to its increasing use in various applications. Generative AI is a subset of artificial intelligence that can produce content such as audio, text, code, video, images, and other data. It has been used in various industries and has been the subject of discussions on its implications, ranging from legal, ethical, and political to ecological, social, and more. Generative AI has also been associated with disinformation and the distortion of the integrity of information. The rise of generative AI is due to a trifecta of factors, including advances in deep learning such as generative adversarial networks, much more data available to train models, and more powerful graphics processing unit in computers.

FACT 05 

CLAIMS:

“Next, we might get Human-Level AI. Which may be coming soon. And we may already be seeing sparks of it in places.”
“AI may be showing sparks of getting to the next level—human-level AI… […] Well, things have been happening recently that suggest we may be seeing the first sparks of human-level intelligence in AI.”

ASSESSMENT: TRUE

Human-level AI, also known as Strong AI or Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), is a hypothetical type of intelligent agent that could learn to accomplish any intellectual task that human beings can perform, possibly surpassing their capabilities in the majority of economically valuable tasks. Some experts predict it may be achievable within the next few years. Recent research from Microsoft suggests that Large Language Models (LLM) are showing sparks of human-level reasoning and performance. However, several AI researchers argue that AGI is still many years away, with some even arguing that it may not be possible at all. While there is debate, it is clear that significant progress has been made in AI research and development, and the possibility of achieving human-level AI is becoming increasingly realistic.

FACT 06 

CLAIMS:

“And finally, there might be Super-Intelligent AI. Which may be coming—but no one knows exactly when.”
“But a few AI experts say we’ll have Super-Intelligent AI this decade.”

ASSESSMENT: TRUE

The development of Artificial Super-Intelligence (ASI) is a hypothetical concept that involves a machine understanding and surpassing human intelligence across all domains of interest. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, along with two other executives, wrote in a blog post that “AI could surpass the ‘expert skill level’ in most fields within a decade”. The same article also states that “trying to stop the emergence of ‘superintelligence’ is impossible”. The development and achievability of ASI is still uncertain. However, many AI experts believe that human-level artificial intelligence will be developed within the next few decades.

FACT 07 

CLAIM:

“In 2016, Microsoft released Tay: a chatbot for 18 to 24-year-olds ‘designed to engage and entertain people through playful conversation’. Tay was launched at seven in the morning, greeting the world happily with this tweet. ‘hellooooooo W🌎rld!!!’ Of course, Tay had been tested in the lab before launch. So how long do you think it took for it to go wrong? By eight pm on the day it was launched, Tay was saying that Hitler ‘did nothing wrong’ and that the Holocaust was ‘made up’. Along with many other violently racist and sexist posts. Tay was shut down just 16 hours after launch - and never fully came back.”

ASSESSMENT: TRUE

Tay, the Microsoft chatbot, was released on March 23, 2016, as an experiment in ‘conversational understanding’. Tay was designed to engage people in dialogue through tweets or direct messages, while emulating the style and slang of a US teenage girl. The more people chatted with Tay, the smarter it was supposed to get, learning to engage people through ‘casual and playful conversation’. However, a subset of Twitter users exploited a vulnerability in Tay, teaching it to post inflammatory and offensive tweets, including violently racist, sexist and supremacist posts. Within 16 hours of its launch, Tay had tweeted more than 96,000 times, and a troubling percentage of its messages were abusive and offensive. At that point, Microsoft took Tay offline and later released an apology on its official blog saying they were ‘deeply sorry for the unintended offensive and hurtful tweets from Tay’. Tay’s responses raised serious questions about the dangers of online conversation and the limitations of artificial intelligence.

FACT 08 

CLAIM:

“The Tay fiasco reflects a common problem with computer systems - known as ‘GIGO’. That’s short for ‘Garbage In, Garbage Out’.”

ASSESSMENT: TRUE

The concept of GIGO (Garbage In, Garbage Out) is a well-known problem in computer science and artificial intelligence. It refers to the idea that the quality of output is determined by the quality of input. If incorrect or flawed data is used as input into a computer program, the output is unlikely to be correct or informative. This concept applies to all logical argumentation, including mathematics, computer science, IT, data science, machine learning, and the internet of things.

FACT 09 

CLAIM:

“In the US, there was an AI system called COMPAS. It tried to predict the chance that someone who’d been arrested would commit a crime in future. It was the subject of a report by a non-profit news organisation called ProPublica. […] Two people were arrested for petty theft: Vincent and Brianna[*]. Vincent had already committed multiple armed robberies. But Brianna only had a few ‘juvenile misdemeanours’ on her record. Vincent is a middle-aged white guy. Brianna is a black teenager. So how did COMPAS rate them? It rated Vincent as LOW risk and Brianna as HIGH risk. According to ProPublica, this same unjust pattern was repeated many times by the Compas AI system. For people with similar characteristics, it rated white people as low risk, and Black people as high risk.”

NOTE:

VINCENT and BRIANNA are pseudonyms for Vernon Prater and Brisha Borden. For reasons of personal privacy we renamed them and gave them new AI-generated pictures, while retaining their demographic details.

ASSESSMENT: TRUE

According to a ProPublica investigation in 2016, the COMPAS AI system was more likely to falsely flag black defendants as future criminals than white defendants. The algorithm wrongly labeled black defendants as high risk at almost twice the rate as white defendants. The investigation also found that only 20 percent of people predicted to commit violent crimes actually went on to do so.

FACT 10 

CLAIM:

“It’s been found that equally-qualified people with ‘African-sounding’ or ‘Muslim-sounding’ names do worse in job applications than people with ‘European-sounding’ names.”

ASSESSMENT: TRUE

Studies have shown that job applicants with Middle Eastern-sounding or African-sounding names are less likely to be called for an interview or offered a job than those with European-sounding names, even when they have the same qualifications. A survey has also found that some employees with foreign-sounding names have been asked to change their names to something more English-sounding.

FACT 11 

CLAIM:

“Except in a few cases, there's no general AI regulator. Often only the manufacturer of an AI system decides what's right for it to do. And their priorities might be very different from yours.”

ASSESSMENT: TRUE

There is currently no comprehensive regulatory framework for AI, and the responsibility for ensuring that AI systems are safe and ethical often falls on the manufacturer. While some countries have established regulatory bodies or guidelines for AI, these are often limited in scope and vary widely between jurisdictions. As a result, the manufacturer of an AI system has a significant degree of autonomy in deciding how the system should be designed and used, and their priorities may not always align with those of the user or society as a whole.

CLAIM:

ASSESSMENT: TRUE

“One problem is that there’s not enough transparency—for example, in job applications. Often, you don’t know when you’re using an AI system, or how it makes its decisions.”

ASSESSMENT: TRUE

Transparency in AI refers to the ability to peer into the workings of an AI model and understand how it reaches its decisions. AI systems can inadvertently perpetuate harmful biases, make inscrutable decisions, or even lead to undesirable outcomes in high-risk applications. There are also ongoing discussions around the need for transparency beyond explainability, such as the purpose of use, the metrics of the AI, the provenance of the data, and information about its potential societal and environmental impacts. While transparency in AI can help mitigate issues of fairness, discrimination, and trust, there are also costs associated with achieving transparency that need to be fully understood.

CLAIM:

“Also, there's not enough predictability. Even when AI systems have been tested in the lab, they can do very surprising things once they get into the real world.”

ASSESSMENT: TRUE

AI systems can sometimes behave unexpectedly in the real world, even after being tested in the lab. This is because the real world is complex and dynamic, and AI systems may encounter situations that were not present in the lab. FACT 15 

CLAIM:

“And then, there's not enough ACCOUNTABILITY – there's no feedback mechanism for regular people to use, if they have a problem with an AI system.”

ASSESSMENT: TRUE

Accountability is a significant issue in AI due to the lack of standardised guidance around AI governance, the complexity of deep learning and machine learning models, and the potential harm that AI systems can cause when they go wrong. However, there are ongoing efforts to establish accountability in AI through regulations and policies that establish certain requirements for companies using AI systems and hold organizations accountable when AI systems do harm. Policymakers and technology experts are debating over how much accountability should be placed on AI designers, developers, and deployers to ensure ethical, trustworthy AI and hold organizations responsible when they fall short of AI guidelines.

CLAIM:

“Many types of Narrow AI don’t use “neural networks” at all. But Generative AI typically creates text and other media by using neural networks.”

“Your brain is a natural neural network. And it is—still!—probably the most complex known object in the universe.”

The brain is a natural neural network, composed of billions of neurons that communicate with each other through synapses. It is responsible for controlling all bodily functions and processes, as well as for cognitive and emotional processing. The brain is indeed one of the most complex structures in the known universe, with its intricate network of neurons and synapses allowing for an incredible range of functions and behaviors. CLAIM:

“Like the human brain, an AI neural network is also a closed box. A lot of what happens in it is a mystery to humans.”

CLAIM: 

“With an AI neural network, humans set up its overall structure and system. But they don’t explicitly create its detailed connections or decision rules. AI neural networks are ‘trained’ with vast amounts of data, usually from the internet. During training, the AI learns and adapts its detailed connections and decision rules by itself.”

ASSESSMENT: TRUE

AI systems work by ingesting large amounts of labeled training data, analyzing the data for correlations and patterns, and using these patterns to make predictions or decisions. While humans do set up the overall structure and system of an AI neural network, AI systems train themselves without human intervention through a process called backpropagation, which involves adjusting the weights and biases of the neural network based on the difference between the predicted output and the actual output. However, it is important to note that AI models still require human input to set parameters, select algorithms, and interpret results.
